I hated Shogun 2 for diplomacy, you could cultivate a friendship with a faction for ages, doing everything right by them and being the best damn ally they could hope for and they ALWAYS stab you in the back at some point without a second thought when your armies are placed too far away to defend from their attack. very basic units very bland factions and the diplomacy ai was none exsistant. Better than the AI sitting outside being shot by towers becuase they lost there seige equiptment.
